Lifetime of Salary Insufficient for UK Employees to Enter Richest 10%, Analysis Says

Per new research, the typical employee in the UK would have to work half a century of earnings to reach the net worth of the most affluent 10% in the country.

Widening Financial Divide Through the Years

The study analyzed net worth statistics including the recent health crisis years and discovered that back in 2006-08, it would have required nearly four decades of average worker salary to join the wealthiest decile of the economic ladder.

A research lead associated with the analysis observed: "Financial divides in Britain are presently so substantial that a average worker setting aside their entire income during their working years would still not be able to reach the top of the financial hierarchy."

Assessing the Economic Gap

The research revealed that the disparity between the wealth of the median citizen and an individual in the top 10% was one million pounds in the mid-2000s, but had increased to 1.3 million pounds in real terms by the pandemic years.

The economist further stated: "These gaps are particularly worrying as financial progression in Britain is restricted – individuals who begin life well-off tend to continue being rich, and vice versa."

Relative Wealth Inequality

Even with the financial disparity expanding in specific figures, the share of total wealth in the UK possessed by the richest households – known as "proportional economic disparity" – has been "broadly stable since the 1980s," according to the research.

Over this timeframe, complete net worth in the UK increased dramatically from triple the yearly economic output, to almost 7.5 times.

Contributors of Wealth Inequality

So-called "passive" increases, through increasing property values and changes in retirement fund assessments, were the key contributors of the expanding economic divide over the past decade, per the report.

These increases typically went to senior citizens with real estate, the analysis reveals – worsening the age-based economic gap.

Generational Financial Divides

The average wealth gap between individuals aged 30-34 and sixty-somethings more than doubled in inflation-adjusted terms, from 135 thousand pounds in 2006-08, to £310,000.

Geographic Variations

Furthermore, the study revealed stark regional variations, with the average level of wealth in 2020-22 amounting to £290k in south-east England, where real estate values have typically increased quickly, versus £110,000 in the north-east.

Pandemic Period Consequences

During the pandemic, when countless laborers were covered under the taxpayer-backed furlough scheme, and Covid shutdowns limited opportunities for spending, the statistics indicate countless homes were able to save, enhancing their financial standing.

Higher-income households performed significantly better, nevertheless. "The typical family in the poorest fifth saw their available funds grow by only eighty pounds over the pandemic period (from 2019 to 2022), broadly the same as the two years pre-pandemic. In contrast, the typical family in the wealthiest fifth saw their liquid savings grow by 4,200 pounds," the study reveals.
