Rob Edwards along with O'Neil represent the initial names in the frame to replace the former manager as head coach of Wolverhampton Wanderers.
The previous coach was sacked on the weekend after the squad's 10-match winless start to the top-flight season.
And Edwards and O'Neil - each of whom have previous links to the team - are among the options to be evaluated by the club ownership.
Edwards is presently at another club, which would create a potential hurdle to his appointment at Molineux.
However the former Luton head coach - who made more than 100 of games for Wolves during his playing career - is considered a leading contender for the position.
The mid-career manager is said to have backing from the Wolves directors as they start the search of hiring a fresh manager.
Gary O'Neil is also appearing as a surprise contender, even though he would be a surprising appointment considering he was sacked by Wolves in December last year.
The ex- West Ham player is out of work which means Wolves would not need to provide any buyout fee.
